Crele penedesenca

Rare Auto‑sexing Breed

Egg Color & Production

  • Lays very dark brown eggs, often matte, sometimes speckled.
  • Egg color is richest at the start of each laying season, then gradually lightens.

Appearance

  • Crele plumage — classic barred pattern in gold, cream, and black; roosters show sharper contrast, hens appear softer and more camouflaged.
  • Carnation (King’s) comb — a single comb in front that splits into multiple lobes at the rear; upright in males, slightly drooping in females.
  • Heat‑tolerant, thrives in warm climates (perfect for Florida).
  • Not cold‑hardy due to large combs.
  • White earlobes with red wattles — unusual for a dark‑egg layer.
  • Light-colored beak, shanks, and toes — nearly white in the Crele variety.

Personality

Crele Penedesencas are lively, alert, and full of personality. They are perfect choice for families and hobbyists who want a beautiful, rare bird that thrives on free‑range living.

They’re active foragers who love to stay busy, making them excellent for pest control and ideal for homes with space to roam. Their Mediterranean heritage gives them exceptional heat tolerance, which makes them a great fit for Florida’s climate.

While they’re naturally flighty and energetic, they’re not aggressive, just independent and curious. They’re low‑maintenance, self‑sufficient birds.

Their alert nature also makes them excellent at spotting predators, a huge advantage for free‑range setups.
